About Me

There are three things I know about myself:
1. I'm ambitious
2. I work hard
3. I get bored

As a result of these traits, I am the master of odd jobs. It's rare that I hold down a job for more than a year at a time. I usually have multiple jobs. I am always looking for the next way to leave some boring aspect of a job behind and strike out on my own.

The thing is, I know that when I 'strike out on my own', I'll inevitably end up in the same place: bored. I'll throw myself in to a job, work my ass off, be a superior employee (or in the case of self-employment be successful), but sooner or later I can't help but get bored.

As adulthood has begun knocking on my door, I've realized that I can't just flit from job to job--at least not if I have any ambition of being financially secure and being able to pursue my hobbies and travel.

I started working when I was 14. I decided I wanted, no, needed a cell phone. My parents, being rational, normal adults of the era where you work for what you want, told me, quite smugly, that I could get a cell phone as soon as I could afford it. I'm sure they had a good laugh about how ridiculous it was for a kid to own a cell phone. They probably thought this was a fleeting desire and I'd get discouraged and pursue some new hobby or another in a few weeks.

For weeks I job hunted. Eventually I found a grocery store willing to hire me. My very first paycheck I bought a cell phone. I bought a used station wagon from my aunt for $700 before I had my license. I loved the freedom of having money and like anyone with money for the first time, spent it all.

When I moved out on my own, I continued this habit. I worked multiple jobs, I made strange purchases, some of which I regret, others I still pride myself on, and ended up in debt because I'd quit a job without quite being able to replace that income. Debit then became a regular thing for me, but I dug myself out of my financial hole and now work toward supporting my (lack of) attention span and habits.

I know I'm not alone. I know there are others out there. We Millenials are known for being flighty and wanting to 'Experience Life' instead of 'working'. We are working, we're just doing it our own way.
